On-board sensors and networks to achieve driving behavior supervision or to prevent overspeed and supervise the fastening of seat belts
According to recent reports from international media, Skyline University in Sharjah, UAE, has initiated an innovative research and development project aimed at enhancing road safety through advanced technology. The initiative involves equipping vehicles with onboard sensors and interconnection capabilities that can communicate with radar systems via electromagnetic waves. These sensors are designed to monitor key driving behaviors such as speed and seat belt usage, providing real-time feedback to drivers.
The proposed system suggests that the road and transportation department install a sensor on each vehicle, which can connect to the onboard computer. If a driver exceeds the speed limit, drives below the minimum speed, or fails to fasten their seat belt, the system will display a warning message on the car's dashboard. In cases where the driver ignores these alerts, the system will automatically issue a ticket through the local traffic authority.
Kakul Agha, one of the researchers involved in the project, explained that the system is designed to improve traffic safety by offering immediate warnings. “When the sensor detects that a driver is speeding or ignoring safety signals, it sends an alert,†he said. “This not only enhances the efficiency of traffic monitoring but also keeps costs low. The radar-based sensors can provide both visual and audible warnings, with the sound becoming more intense as the speed increases.â€
Frejieh, another researcher, added that once drivers become aware that Smart Street technology tracks all their driving activities, they are likely to adopt safer habits and reduce the likelihood of accidents. He further suggested that integrating the system with local police stations would allow for faster enforcement, ensuring that drivers who repeatedly ignore the warnings face legal consequences.
This project represents a significant step forward in using smart technology to create a safer and more responsible driving environment. By combining real-time data collection with automated alerts, the system aims to reduce human error and improve overall road safety.
