Chen Zhenguo: Big screen TV is a consumer choice and trend
On November 11, 2017, at 11 a.m., the echoes of the Double 11 shopping frenzy were still strong. In the command center of Foxconn’s Longhua headquarters, the president of Foxconn Technology Group, along with vice presidents and executives from Fulianwang IOT Smart Home Co., Ltd., were closely monitoring Sharp TV’s performance across various platforms. Dr. Chen Zhenguo, chairman of the board for Sharp TV in China, was also observing real-time sales figures. When asked how Sharp managed to reclaim its position as market leader in such a short time, Dr. Chen proudly explained the seamless integration between Foxconn and Sharp.
“At 0:18 on this year’s Double 11, we broke last year’s sales record on the Lynx platform, achieving 200 million yuan in just 21 minutes. This gives us great confidence that we will exceed our goals this year,†he said. According to the data, the 60-inch and 70-inch TVs dominated sales, a fact that Dr. Chen was particularly proud of.
The success of these large-screen models was no accident. Last year, Sharp introduced the concept of “70-inch for the living room and 60-inch for the bedroom,†which generated over one billion yuan in sales on Tmall. Several 60-inch models had already surpassed 100 million in turnover, while 70-inch TVs were nearly sold out. This confirmed Dr. Chen’s belief that consumers are increasingly favoring larger TVs.
Consumers’ desire for a better quality of life is instinctive. Foxconn and Sharp are optimistic about the future of 60-inch and 70-inch TVs. While 55-inch models remain popular, Sharp’s bold move into larger sizes has set a new direction for the market. As living standards rise, the demand for bigger screens is growing, and Sharp’s strategy aligns perfectly with this trend.
Dr. Chen emphasized that large-screen TVs are the natural evolution of the market. “This isn’t just a brand strategy; it’s a reflection of human needs. People always want better products and a better life. We’re just following the trend and doing what’s right,†he said.
Looking ahead, Dr. Chen believes 2018 will be the year of 60-inch and 70-inch TVs, which will eventually become mainstream. He also predicted that 8K technology would take off by 2018. With events like the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics experimenting with 8K broadcasts, the industry is preparing for a major shift.
In his view, 8K technology won’t make much sense for smaller TVs. Instead, it will thrive in the 50-inch and above segment. The maturity of 60-inch and 70-inch models makes them the ideal candidates for 8K content. Foxconn is investing heavily in this space, including the construction of a 10.5-generation factory in Guangzhou and another in Wisconsin, USA, to produce 8K LCD panels.
At the 8K conference in Shanghai, Sharp announced the AQUOS 8K TV, marking the official entry of the TV market into the 8K era. Despite skepticism, Dr. Chen remains confident that with the right infrastructure and partnerships, 8K will soon become mainstream.
Beyond TVs, Sharp’s white goods are also part of the plan. “Our black products are key to Foxconn’s industrial transformation. Sharp TV opened the door, and now we aim to expand our presence across all product lines—washing machines, air purifiers, small appliances, and more,†Dr. Chen said.
From near-bankruptcy to market leadership, Sharp’s resurgence under Foxconn’s guidance is nothing short of remarkable. With strategic investments in 8K, smart home solutions, and a broader product portfolio, the future looks bright. Will this “magic†continue? Only time will tell.
