In 2018, the three major operators have different performances.
In late 2017, the three major Chinese telecom operators achieved impressive results. As we look into 2018, what were their performances? Reports indicate that China Unicom saw the highest net increase in 4G subscribers, while China Mobile continued to expand its broadband user base.
On February 23rd, the three major operators released their performance data for January 2018, marking a strong start to the year. In January, each operator showcased its strengths: China Mobile led in net mobile subscriber growth, China Telecom topped in mobile user gains, and China Unicom took the lead in 4G user additions. This demonstrated a positive beginning for all three companies in 2018.
When comparing January 2018 data with December 2017, there was a slight increase across the board. China Telecom experienced the largest rise in mobile users, with a net gain of 5.06 million compared to just 2.12 million in December. For 4G users, China Unicom had the highest net addition at 64.15 million, while China Telecom's net gain increased by nearly one million users from the previous month. Meanwhile, China Mobile lagged slightly behind both competitors and its own December figures.
In terms of broadband services, China Mobile continued to show strong performance, with a net increase of 2.548 million users compared to December. Given the fierce competition in the broadband market, maintaining steady growth is no small feat. Notably, China Unicom and China Telecom had negative growth in December but managed to turn things around in January, showing a positive trend.
Specifically, in January 2018, China Mobile had 891 million mobile users, with a net gain of 3.843 million. Its 4G user base reached 655 million, up by 5.242 million. The company also added 4.076 million broadband users, bringing the total to 117 million.
China Telecom reported a net gain of 5.06 million mobile users, reaching 2.5502 billion in total. Its 4G user count increased by 5.73 million, totaling 187.77 million. In fixed-line broadband, the company added 1.03 million users, reaching 134.56 million. Additionally, as of the end of January 2018, China Telecom Group had 156 million broadband users nationwide.
China Unicom saw a net gain of 2.872 million mobile users, totaling 287.03 million. Its 4G user base grew by 6.415 million, reaching 181.29 million. In fixed-line broadband, the company added 501,000 users, totaling 77.04 million.
As the Spring Festival approached, China Unicom and China Telecom made a strong start in 2018, earning them the reputation of being "very strong" in the early part of the year. China Unicom's success in 4G growth was driven by Internet-based packages like the "Dawang Card" and "Xiaowang Card." These cards accounted for a large portion of new 4G users, with the Tencent Dawang Card alone surpassing 50 million users. The low cost per user—under 100 yuan—made these packages highly effective.
China Unicom also expanded its offline efforts in 2018, launching initiatives such as the "Empty Nest Action" in Hunan and organizing employees to study best practices in Henan. The combination of the "Dawangka + Ice Cream Package" became a key strategy for attracting users. During the Spring Festival, these offline activities continued, leading to significant growth in 4G users in February.
China Telecom maintained consistent progress, with strong growth in mobile users and steady development in 4G and fixed-line services. While not as aggressive as Unicom or Mobile, it remained stable and reliable.
Despite the strong performances of Unicom and Telecom, China Mobile still holds the top position in the market, with over 650 million 4G users and a dominant presence in the fixed-line sector. The competitive landscape has become more balanced, which is beneficial for the market, industry development, and consumer interests.
From the January data, it’s clear that 2018 is shaping up to be a more competitive year, where all three operators are pushing forward with innovation and growth strategies. This healthy competition is a positive sign for the future of the telecommunications industry.
