In 2018, the three major operators have different performances.
In early 2018, the three major Chinese telecom operators—China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom—showed distinct performances in their first month of the year. While each company had its own strengths, the data revealed a competitive landscape that was more balanced than in previous years.
At the end of 2017, all three operators achieved impressive results, but what did 2018 bring? According to recent reports, China Unicom saw the highest net increase in 4G subscribers, while China Mobile continued to lead in broadband user growth. This marked a strong start for all three companies as they entered the new year.
On February 23rd, the operators released their January 2018 performance data. In that month, China Mobile led in net mobile subscriber growth, while China Telecom took the top spot in mobile user gains. Meanwhile, China Unicom stood out with the largest increase in 4G users. These figures demonstrated that each operator had found its own way to grow in a highly competitive market.
Compared to December 2017, the overall growth for mobile users across the three operators was modest. However, China Telecom saw the most significant increase, with a net gain of 5.06 million users in January, compared to just 2.12 million in December. For 4G users, China Unicom had the largest net addition at 64.15 million, while China Telecom’s 4G user growth also rose by nearly one million. China Mobile, on the other hand, lagged slightly behind both competitors.
In terms of broadband services, China Mobile maintained its leading position, with a net increase of 2.548 million broadband users in January. This was no small feat given the intense competition in the broadband market. China Unicom and China Telecom also showed improvement, with China Unicom reversing a negative trend from December and seeing positive growth in broadband users for the first time.
Specifically, in January 2018, China Mobile had 891 million total mobile users, with a net increase of 3.843 million. Its 4G user base reached 655 million, up by 5.242 million. The company also added 4.076 million broadband users during the month.
China Telecom reported a net increase of 5.06 million mobile users, bringing its total to 2.55 billion. Its 4G user base grew by 5.73 million, reaching 187.77 million. In fixed-line broadband, it added 1.03 million users, totaling 134.56 million. Additionally, the parent company of China Telecom Group reported 156 million broadband users as of the end of January.
China Unicom recorded a net increase of 2.872 million mobile users, reaching 287.03 million. Its 4G user base grew by 6.415 million, totaling 181.29 million. In fixed-line broadband, it added 501,000 users, reaching 77.04 million.
Looking at the beginning of 2018, China Unicom and China Telecom were particularly strong. Borrowing a phrase from the Spring Festival Gala, they were "very strong" in the early months of the year. China Unicom's success in 4G growth was driven by its Internet-based packages like the "Dawang Card" and "Xiaowang Card." These cards helped attract a large number of new users, with some, like the Tencent Dawang Card, reaching over 50 million users. The strategy was fast and cost-effective, with development costs per user under 100 yuan.
China Unicom also expanded its offline operations in many provinces, such as Hunan's "Empty Nest Action" and Henan's efforts to engage migrant workers returning home. The combination of "Dawangka + Ice Cream Package" became a powerful tool for user acquisition. With ongoing offline activities during the Spring Festival, China Unicom was expected to see even stronger growth in 4G users in February.
China Telecom maintained steady progress, showing consistent improvements in all areas. It led in mobile user growth and maintained stable 4G expansion. In fixed-line services, it remained the market leader despite the aggressive moves from China Mobile.
Despite the strong performances of Unicom and Telecom, China Mobile still held the position of the "big brother" in the market. It had a much larger user base, with over 650 million 4G users, and continued to dominate the fixed-line market.
The January 2018 data signaled a shift from what used to be a "China Mobile carnival." A more balanced competition among the three operators is a positive sign for the industry, encouraging innovation and better service for consumers.
