PPE replaces PVC into the trend of the wire and cable industry

From July 1st this year, the European Union's "Regulations on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment" (RoHS) came into effect. This move will lead the global raw material suppliers to design and produce environmentally friendly new materials. In the field of wire and cable production, high-performance polyphenylene ether (PPE) resins have been used to replace conventional PVC resins to manufacture cable jackets.

With the promulgation and implementation of the “Double Green” (RoHS and WEEE) Directives of the European Union, an environmental storm has begun to engulf the Chinese electronics and wire and cable industries. In order for the product to comply with the RoHS directive, many home appliance manufacturing companies require that the raw material supplier must make a written commitment to the product to be RoHS compliant and provide an inspection certificate from an authoritative inspection agency. There are even vendors and material suppliers who have signed green supply chain agreements to ensure `green procurement' and ensure that the products exported to the EU meet the requirements. In this case, traditional PVC materials are being phased out due to the need to add a large number of {TodayHot} flame retardants, and high-performance PPE resins are becoming the new darling of the wire and cable industry.

Hong Kong Letin Industrial Co., Ltd. has used GE Plastics' flexible Noryl polyphenylene ether resin to produce acoustic cable insulation jackets for flat-panel TVs. This new environmentally-friendly material, with its flame-retardant properties, conforms to the trend of the market to abandon halogenated flame retardants. It has better chemical resistance and lower relative density than PVC material, good flexibility can give wire good integrity and appearance, and flexible Noryl resin is easy to process, can itself be pre-colored without painting, etc. Sub-processing has become a powerful weapon for electronic companies to attack the EU market. In the automotive electronics sector, component manufacturers have also begun to use polyphenylene ether resin materials to produce wire and cable jackets. Delphi Pike Electronics chose flexible Noryl resin for the sheathing of automotive wires to replace PVC wire materials. Because new materials have characteristics such as relatively low density, light weight, and thin wall thickness, they can help save space in the vehicle, reduce weight, and improve vehicle fuel economy.

Experts believe that the characteristics of PPE materials make it a competitive advantage in the wire and cable industry. With the strong promotion of new environmental protection laws and regulations in various countries, its competitiveness is increasing.
