The air-conditioning market started “healthy wind” more violent than ever

Every spring, the home appliance market enters its "air conditioning season." This year is no different. Starting this week, Gome's "Black Week" and Suning's Spring Quality Home Appliances Life Festival have made air conditioners a central focus of recent promotions. From past experience, consumers usually begin preparing for air conditioning installation before sales kick off in early March. The goal is to avoid the peak season after May and take advantage of time differences to bypass summer price surges. The air conditioning market has been experiencing a "health trend" for some time now. With the flu hitting during winter and spring, and growing awareness of indoor air quality, the health-focused features of air conditioners have taken on greater importance. According to the "2018 Air Conditioning White Paper" released by Zhongyikang Times, a joint research company of Suning, the "health trend" is expected to be even stronger this year. **Old air conditioners become "sources of pollution"** As more households use air conditioners, these devices have increasingly become hidden health hazards. A recent report from the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that indoor air pollution sources account for 42% of total household pollution, making it the leading source of indoor contamination. A survey conducted in cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen found that 88% of air conditioner fins had bacteria levels exceeding standards, and 84% had mold counts above acceptable limits. Some readings showed up to 91,259 colony-forming units per cubic meter (CFU/m³), with an average of 3,864.48 CFU/m³—over 40 times the standard limit. In the worst cases, levels were nearly 100 times higher than allowed. Experts warn that the health risks posed by old air conditioners may be more severe than many realize. To address this, several solutions are being proposed: first, improving the materials used in air conditioners, especially for older models that need upgrading; second, increasing demand for self-cleaning models, which saw a 6.2% rise in market share last year; and third, encouraging better cleaning habits among users, as many tend to neglect maintenance, increasing health risks. **60% of old air conditioners need replacement** Due to their outdated technology, many consumers are now prioritizing health features when purchasing new units, driving the replacement of old models. According to market data, there are currently 126 million split-type air conditioners in Chinese homes reaching their renewal period. It’s estimated that 58.7% will be replaced in 2018. From a consumer demand perspective, Zhongyikang’s market analysis at the end of 2017 showed that product upgrades continued in 2017. Inverter, high-efficiency, smart, and self-cleaning models remained popular. Inverter air conditioners accounted for 75.6% of offline retail sales, up 1.5% from the previous year. High-efficiency models (first, second, and third grade) made up 46%, 20%, and 33.7% of the market respectively, showing growth in top-tier models. Smart air conditioners also gained traction, holding 33.3% of the offline market, up 4.2% compared to the same period last year. This trend is even more evident in online sales, where consumer preferences are shifting toward healthier, smarter options. **"Trade-in" programs drive air conditioning upgrades** With rising demand for full control over indoor air quality, manufacturers are setting new industry standards and forming the New Wind Industry Alliance. This year, the air conditioning market is starting strong, with "old-for-new" trade-ins likely to become a key theme. For consumers, replacing old units with eco-friendly, air-purifying, or fresh-air models could lead to significant savings through subsidies. For example, Suning offers rebates of up to 600 yuan for customers who trade in their old units for new models. The company expects to distribute 2 billion yuan in subsidies this year, benefiting around 5 million households. These incentives are expected to accelerate the transition to healthier, more efficient air conditioning systems.
