The air-conditioning market started “healthy wind†more violent than ever
Every spring, the home appliance market enters its "air conditioning season." This year is no different. Starting this week, Gome's "Black Week" and Suning's Spring Quality Home Appliances Life Festival have made air conditioners a major focus of the recent promotions. Historically, consumers begin preparing for air conditioner installation in early March, aiming to avoid the peak season in May and take advantage of price differences before summer temperatures rise.
The air conditioning market has been experiencing a "health trend" for some time. The flu season during winter and spring, along with growing awareness of indoor air quality, has given this "healthy wind" special significance. According to the "2018 Air Conditioning White Paper" released by Zhongyikang Times, an independent market research firm, the health-focused trend in the air conditioning industry may be stronger than ever this year.
**Old air conditioners become "sources of pollution"**
As more households use air conditioners, they have increasingly become hidden health hazards. A recent report from the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that indoor air pollution sources account for 42% of total household pollution, making them the leading source of contamination in homes.
A survey conducted in cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen found that 88% of air conditioner fins had bacterial levels exceeding standards, while 84% had mold counts that were also too high. Some readings showed up to 91,259 colony-forming units per cubic meter, far above the acceptable limit—over 40 times higher than the standard. In the worst cases, the contamination was nearly 100 times over the limit.
Experts warn that the health risks associated with old air conditioners could be more severe than previously thought. To address this, several solutions are being promoted: first, using healthier materials in new models; second, increasing the demand for self-cleaning features, which now make up 14.4% of the offline market, up 6.2% compared to the previous year; and third, encouraging better cleaning habits among users, as many neglect regular maintenance, increasing health risks.
**60% of old air conditioners need replacement**
Due to their inefficiency and potential health risks, many consumers are now prioritizing health features when purchasing new air conditioners. Market data shows that 126 million split-type air conditioners in China are entering their renewal phase, with an expected replacement rate of 58.7% in 2018.
From a consumer demand perspective, Zhongyikang’s market research at the end of 2017 highlighted a continued shift toward upgraded product structures. Energy efficiency, inverter technology, smart functions, and self-cleaning capabilities remain key trends. Inverter air conditioners accounted for 75.6% of retail sales, up 1.5% from the previous year. High-efficiency models (first, second, and third grade) represented 46.0%, 20.0%, and 33.7% of the market, respectively. Smart air conditioners captured 33.3% of the offline market, a 4.2% increase year-on-year.
These trends are even more pronounced in the offline market, showing a clear movement toward healthier and smarter options.
**"Trade-in" programs drive air conditioning upgrades**
With rising consumer demand for better indoor air quality, manufacturers are introducing new industry standards and forming the New Wind Industry Alliance. This year, the air conditioning market is starting strong, with “old-for-new†trade-ins likely to become a major theme.
For consumers, replacing old units with energy-efficient, eco-friendly models comes with high demand and potential subsidies. For example, Suning offers discounts of up to 600 yuan for customers who trade in their old machines for new ones. The company expects to allocate 2 billion yuan in subsidies through price reductions and refunds this year, benefiting approximately 5 million households.
