Artificial intelligence agents are born! The CIA collects social data like this

[Netease Smart News, September 13] The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is actively exploring the use of artificial intelligence to enhance its data collection and analytical capabilities. These advanced systems are designed to gather and process vast amounts of information, particularly from social media platforms, which have become a key source of intelligence.

Historically, the CIA relied on manual methods for data gathering before the creation of the Intelligence Community in 1947. While computers revolutionized this process, modern techniques still face challenges in handling the sheer volume of digital information generated today. As Dawn Meyerriecks, deputy director of technology development at the CIA, explained, traditional computing methods now seem outdated compared to the power of AI. Currently, the agency is working on 137 active projects, many of which involve collaboration with Silicon Valley tech firms to develop cutting-edge solutions.

Artificial intelligence enables the CIA to not only collect more data but also analyze it more efficiently. These systems scan social media and public records, identifying patterns and insights that might otherwise go unnoticed. In fact, a significant portion of the intelligence gathered by the agency comes from online activity—something that has become almost common knowledge.

However, AI introduces a new level of speed and scale. Joseph Gartin, head of the KIA Kent Academy, noted that the way data is collected from social media has fundamentally changed. Chris Hurst, COO of Stabilitas, added: “Human behavior is data, and artificial intelligence is the model that interprets it.”

Robert Cardillo, director of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, highlighted the potential of AI during a speech in June. He said that manually analyzing the commercial satellite imagery expected over the next two decades would require 8 million analysts. By using AI, the agency aims to automate about 75% of its current workload. If AI can improve itself over time, efficiency could reach even greater heights.

While the U.S. leads in AI-driven intelligence, Russia lags significantly behind. However, the global push toward AI is forcing even slower adopters to catch up. Analysts suggest that whoever can develop faster, smarter data extraction and analysis tools will gain a major advantage in the intelligence game. In an era where data is power, AI is becoming the ultimate tool for those who control it.
