Artificial intelligence agents are born! The CIA collects social data like this
[Netease Smart News, September 13] The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is actively exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance its data collection and analytical capabilities. This initiative aims to improve the efficiency of gathering and interpreting information, particularly from social media platforms.
Historically, the CIA relied on manual data collection before the establishment of the Intelligence Community in 1947. While the introduction of computers significantly sped up the process, modern systems still face challenges in handling vast amounts of data quickly. According to Dawn Meyerriecks, deputy director of technology development at the CIA, AI offers a much more advanced solution compared to traditional computer technologies.
The agency currently has over 137 active projects focused on AI development, many of which involve collaboration with tech experts from Silicon Valley. These efforts are aimed at not only collecting more data but also processing it faster and more accurately. AI systems can sift through massive volumes of public records and social media content, making it easier for the CIA to identify relevant information.
Joseph Gartin, head of the KIA Kent Academy, noted that AI has dramatically changed the speed and scale at which social media data can be collected. Chris Hurst, COO of Stabilitas, added, “Human behavior is data, and artificial intelligence is a data model.†This highlights how AI is becoming an essential tool in understanding patterns and predicting behaviors.
Robert Cardillo, director of the U.S. National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, emphasized the potential of AI in automating tasks that would otherwise require thousands of analysts. He stated that using AI could automate around 75% of current workloads. If AI systems can self-improve, the efficiency gains could be even greater.
While the U.S. leads in AI development, especially in intelligence applications, Russia lags behind. However, the global push toward AI is forcing countries like Russia to accelerate their own efforts. As one analyst pointed out, those who can extract, classify, and analyze data faster than humans or other AI systems will gain a significant advantage in the race for technological supremacy.
