On November 30th, the Fifth China Internet Audiovisual Conference kicked off in Chengdu with great enthusiasm. The event brought together over 300 industry leaders, more than 1,000 institutions, and around 5,000 professionals who gathered to share insights and discuss the future of online media. Among the highlights of the conference was Mango TV's self-produced program "2017 Deformer," which received two prestigious awards: "Annual Public Welfare Team" and "Annual Outstanding Network Audiovisual Program." The recognition was a well-deserved achievement for the team behind this long-running and impactful show.
The public welfare spirit has always been at the core of the "Deformer" team’s work. Over the years, the show has consistently demonstrated a strong sense of social responsibility. In 2017 alone, the program team, in collaboration with the Mango V Fund and sponsors, launched several charitable initiatives, including the "Inflation Deficit Inspirational Startups and Happy Library Donation Ceremony," "Deformers Inspirational Support," and the "One Dollar Dream Plan." These efforts have helped numerous rural students, such as Shui Lishui Fuxiongmei, Xu Pengsheng, Yao Jindong, Wang Hongyu, Ou Zengyuan, Wu Qianwen, and Wu Xinyuan, by supporting their education and daily lives.
During the filming process, the team treated each participant like family, offering emotional and practical support. In August, the team received heartwarming news that Xu Pengsheng had been admitted to his dream university, bringing joy to everyone involved. In an entertainment landscape often focused on superficial content, "Deformer" stands out with its genuine storytelling and real-world impact, drawing attention to underprivileged youth in remote areas.
Despite the common belief that reality shows tend to fade after three seasons, "Deformer" continues to thrive. By the end of 2017, the show had amassed over 2.44 billion views across its 13th and 14th seasons on Mango TV. Its popularity and reputation remain unmatched among similar programs, especially in the digital space.
What sets "Deformer" apart is not just its unique concept but also its commitment to authenticity. While the show doesn’t rely on natural advantages, it has captured the hearts of audiences through its innovative format—allowing urban and rural youth to experience each other’s lives. As a traditional reality show, "Deformer" avoids clichés, focusing instead on real-life stories and current issues. For instance, when star-chasing city hero Chen Siyuan failed to transform in one episode, the show didn’t shy away from showing the full story. Similarly, when runaway boy Zheng Zihao walked 40 kilometers, the crew followed him closely with multiple cameras.
The “deformation meter†of “slowing down†and “sinking in†has left a deep impression on viewers, making them feel emotionally connected to the show. It’s not just about transformation—it’s about real growth, empathy, and the power of human connection.
