Foreign media: The more accurate and dangerous the face data Apple shares with APP users
[World Wide Web Reporter Lindy] According to a recent report from the "Washington Post," Apple has published detailed security white papers and supporting documents that outline the security features of Face ID facial recognition technology. The company has revealed that developers can access users' facial data through the True Depth camera system, which raises concerns among privacy experts. Some worry that in the future, apps could use this data to determine gender, ethnicity, or even detect medical conditions like depression based on facial expressions.
Apple clarified that while third-party apps cannot use Face ID's facial data to unlock devices, they are allowed to use the True Depth camera for scanning facial data to create more immersive augmented reality experiences. This includes capturing real-time facial movements, topography, and expressions, which are highly accurate and processed instantly.
The 3D facial map generated by Apple contains 52 micro-expressions, such as eye movements and mouth shapes, enabling developers to create realistic avatars or interactive AR content. An example is MeasureKit, an app developed by Rinat Khanov, which utilizes the True Depth camera tools to track facial features with precision.
Before the release of the iPhone X, Apple had already introduced a privacy policy to regulate how third-party apps use the TrueDepth camera. However, journalist Geoffrey Fowler from the Washington Post expressed concerns that future developers might exploit facial data for purposes beyond what was initially intended, such as detecting sensitive personal traits or health conditions.
Apple spokesperson Tom Neumayr emphasized the company's strong commitment to user privacy and security. He stated, "We take privacy and security very seriously. This is reflected in the robust protections we have built around Face ID data, including the Secure Enclave on the iPhone X and numerous other technical safeguards across iOS." With these measures in place, Apple aims to ensure that facial data remains secure and used responsibly.
