Foreign media: The more accurate and dangerous the face data Apple shares with APP users

[World Wide Web Reporter Lindy] According to a recent report from the "Washington Post," Apple has released detailed security white papers and supporting documents that outline the robust security features of its Face ID facial recognition technology. The company now allows developers to access users' facial data through the True Depth camera system, opening up new possibilities for augmented reality (AR) applications. However, this move has sparked concerns among industry experts about potential privacy risks.

Apple clarified that while third-party apps cannot use Face ID's facial data to unlock devices, they are permitted to utilize the True Depth camera for scanning facial features to create more immersive AR experiences. This includes capturing real-time facial expressions, topography, and movement, which can be used for advanced 3D character modeling or interactive selfies.

The 3D facial map generated by Apple contains over 52 micro-expressions, covering everything from eye movements to mouth shapes. Developers like Rinat Khanov have already begun experimenting with these tools, creating apps such as MeasureKit that leverage the True Depth camera for various purposes.

Before the release of the iPhone X, Apple introduced a privacy policy to ensure transparency around how third-party apps use the TrueDepth camera. Despite these measures, some experts, like Washington Post reporter Geoffrey Fowler, remain concerned that future developers could exploit facial data to determine gender, ethnicity, or even detect mental health conditions like depression through subtle facial cues.

In response, Apple spokesperson Tom Neumayr emphasized the company’s commitment to user privacy and security. He stated, “We take privacy and security very seriously. Our protection around Face ID data is built into the Secure Enclave on the iPhone X, and we’ve implemented numerous other technical safeguards across iOS to ensure user data remains secure.”

As facial recognition technology continues to evolve, the balance between innovation and privacy will remain a critical topic for both tech companies and consumers alike.
