Intelligent control makes lighting more energy efficient

As the main energy-saving light source at present, energy-saving lamps (CFL) and LEDs are increasingly appearing in homes, offices, streets and other places. Most energy-saving lamps and LED light sources are often equipped with a compact, relatively low-cost driving power supply, which can significantly improve the system's luminous efficiency (lm / W), improve system reliability, reduce start-up time, dimming, extend lamp life, etc. . These characteristics have had a positive impact on the reduction in lighting energy consumption, but this is not enough.

Part of the energy generated by lighting comes from the light source itself, and the other part comes from people's habits. With a more intelligently controlled drive power supply, the operating mode of the lighting device can be improved to further save energy.

Intelligent lighting is usually achieved by building a control system. Among them, each lighting device and other auxiliary devices (such as sensors, cameras, etc.) will be given a separate address. In this way, the user can control the switching and brightness adjustment characteristics of each device. And the intelligent system also has the ability to learn and optimize. By statistically analyzing the energy consumption of lighting equipment, users can intuitively understand the relationship between usage habits and energy consumption, thereby optimizing the way of use, extending the life of the light source, and achieving more energy-saving effects.

Retrofitting costs are another core issue that users are very concerned about. There are two ways to build an intelligent lighting system: wired control and wireless control. In terms of cost and ease of retrofitting, wireless control has undoubtedly an unparalleled advantage. Whether it's a new building or an old home, wireless control enables intelligent control system construction in the shortest time and at the lowest cost. In addition, the emergence of more and more portable smart devices makes the wireless control mode more acceptable to users.

Figure 1: Intelligent lighting control system.

Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of an intelligent lighting control system. Each source in the system has a separate IP address and can be wirelessly controlled by devices with other IP addresses (such as smartphones, tablets, computers). Users can also set up some common scenarios and store them on the Internet's cloud server. As a protocol conversion device, the gateway converts the TCP/IP protocol-based control commands uploaded from the smart terminal or server into ZigBee or JanNet-IP protocols used in the lighting system to control the lights. For small systems with a limited number of nodes, the switch or remote control may be simpler and more straightforward. In addition, a richer control mode can be achieved by introducing sensors.

In the case of a home application, an individual user can remotely control the lighting device, and all the lights in the home can be turned off by the mobile phone; the devices can be freely grouped according to the area and functions to achieve more precise control; The application, which sets different scene modes (such as dimming the background light while watching a movie), further optimizes the efficiency of the light source. In the control system, the communication between the lighting device and the control terminal is two-way, and the usage of the lighting device can be monitored in real time, and the data is stored on the cloud server. Through the aggregation and analysis of data, Internet service providers can get users' usage habits and suggest more optimized lighting methods from the perspective of energy saving.

In the case of factory applications, different lighting areas (such as office areas, canteens, and production areas) typically have significant time characteristics for lighting control. With a simple timer program and intelligent control system, you can configure the lighting on time and brightness to achieve energy saving without human intervention. More complex intelligent control can be achieved by adding an optical sensor or a motion sensor. If the illuminance sensor is installed in the office area, the brightness of the light can be automatically adjusted according to the natural light intensity. In combination with the motion sensor, by sensing whether someone has passed, the switch on the light in the corridor can be automatically adjusted to achieve further energy saving.

As one of the major chip suppliers in the field of lighting, NXP Semiconductors has noticed the intelligent development of lighting systems a few years ago. By integrating the technical advantages of light source drive, low power supply, wireless RF and MCU related product lines, NXP proposes the first generation of intelligent lighting system solutions based on JN514X, as shown in Figure 2. Thanks to the advantages of the semiconductor integration process, the drive power with intelligent control function has not significantly increased in size compared with the conventional drive power supply, and can fully meet the requirements of a small power supply space such as an LED bulb or an energy-saving lamp.

Intelligent control gives lighting a completely different concept, making the light source an important part of The Internet of Things. Through the Internet of Things, users can control devices with independent addresses (including light sources, home appliances, etc.) to achieve green, safe, convenient and comfortable life. This is the main product development of NXP's related product lines in recent years. direction.
