Weinbaum wrote a novel that introduced the idea of virtual reality through glasses, involving an immersive experience that included sight, smell, and touch. This is considered the first work to introduce the concept of VR. So maybe we can say he's the "first ancestor" of the VR idea (I'm saying this myself, it might not be 100% accurate, but I think the meaning is clear).
