Recently, ChargePoint launched an exciting new feature that lets electric car owners charge their vehicles using their smartphones and near field communication (NFC) technology. Of course, this doesn’t mean your phone can power your car directly. Instead, ChargePoint operates one of the largest EV charging networks in North America, and now it's introducing a “one-touch charging†function. This allows drivers with Android, iPhone, or Apple Watch to charge at over 40,000 terminals across the region simply by tapping their device.
Before this update, drivers had to use an RFID card, which they received when signing up for the ChargePoint network, or use the ChargePoint app to start charging. With the new “one-touch†feature, all you need to do is tap your NFC-enabled phone on the charging station — no more fumbling for a card or opening an app.
Founded in California back in 2007, ChargePoint has become one of the most recognized names in the EV charging industry in the U.S. Its services have since expanded to Australia, and recently, the company raised $125 million to enter the European market. So far, it has secured nearly $300 million in total equity financing.
While the automotive market is still dominated by traditional vehicles, the global electric vehicle sector is growing rapidly. Government incentives like tax breaks and exemptions are driving adoption, especially in Europe, which has become the second-largest EV market after China. Companies like Volvo are shifting entirely to electric and hybrid models, while Uber plans to transition its London fleet to electric and hybrid cars by 2019.
Currently, the “one-touch charging†feature is only available in the U.S., but it's expected to expand to more European markets soon. ChargePoint predicts a significant increase in adoption in Europe in 2018, with the technology gradually entering major cities.
In 2017, sales of pure electric vehicles in the U.S. jumped by 47% following the release of the Tesla Model 3. More recently, Tesla also announced plans to expand its supercharger network to city centers and highways across the country.
This “one-touch†feature is currently supported on Android 4.4 and above, iPhones 6 and newer, and Apple Watch. To use it, users can create a ChargePoint Pass by clicking “Add Pass to Apple Wallet†within the ChargePoint app. Then, simply press your finger on the Touch ID sensor and hold your phone near the charging station to start charging. For Apple Watch users, just double-click the side button and bring the watch close to the contactless reader.
This innovation not only makes charging easier but also adds a touch of convenience that feels almost like magic — just like something out of a novel.
