The Toyota Research Institute, based in Silicon Valley, Calif., in January this year, partnered with two of the top US universities, Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to establish a research center in the Silicon Valley cities of Palo Alto and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Both research centers are dedicated to researching key technologies such as artificial intelligence required for automotive autonomous driving.

Toyota Research Institute CEO Gil Platt said in a speech at a technology conference in San Jose, Silicon Valley, on the 7th that the third research center to be opened, in collaboration with the University of Michigan, is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The research center will be equipped with approximately 50 R&D staff, led by two professors at the University of Michigan, who are leaders in map positioning and sensing technology.

According to reports, the three research centers of the Toyota Research Institute have different research priorities around the field of autonomous driving. The Ann Arbor Research Center focuses on fully automated driving without manual intervention. The Palo Alto Research Center focuses on assisted driving techniques, while the Cambridge Research Center focuses on simulation and deep learning techniques.

Toyota announced in November last year that it established the Toyota Research Institute in the United States and invested $1 billion in research and development plans for the Institute within five years from 2016, with a focus on artificial intelligence and autonomous driving.
