How does traditional opera culture inherit from VR and other new technologies? These operas/VR players have something to say

On December 22nd, the 4th National Congress of the Chinese Opera Performance Association and the first Chinese Opera Performance Art + VR Industry Summit Forum were held in Anqing, hosted by the Chinese Opera Performance Society and the People's Government of Yixiu District, with Digital World (Beijing) Technology & Culture Co., Ltd. as the organizer. VR Network was invited as a special media partner to cover the event. The summit brought together industry leaders, scholars, and technology experts to explore the integration of traditional Chinese opera with modern technologies such as virtual reality (VR). The forum focused on how contemporary science and technology, especially VR, can be used to enhance the creative transformation and innovative development of traditional opera arts. Discussions revolved around expanding the application of modern tech in the performing arts, fostering interactive experiences, and preserving cultural heritage through digital innovation. Notable participants included Yi Dong, Executive Director of the Chinese Opera Performance Society and Assistant Dean of Wuhan University’s School of Art; Lin Ruiwu, former Vice President of the Fujian Academy of Arts; He Yimin, CEO of Digital World; Li Hongxin, General Manager of Beijing Disheng Digital Entertainment; Xie Haifeng, founder of Chengdu Jimu Chuangyi Arts and head of Guangdong’s intangible cultural heritage VR production base; Zhang Wulong, Marketing Director of Beijing Huijie Technology; and others. Throughout the event, panelists shared insights on the challenges and opportunities of merging traditional opera with VR. Yi Dong emphasized the importance of respecting the artistic and cultural essence of opera while leveraging technology for broader audience engagement. Lin Ruiwu raised concerns about the potential loss of live performance authenticity and the risk of reducing the emotional depth of traditional performances when digitized. Zhang Wulong from Beijing Huijie Technology discussed the role of VR in making opera more accessible to younger audiences, suggesting that interactive elements and virtual characters could help bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. Xie Haifeng highlighted the challenges of content creation in non-material cultural heritage, stressing the need for long-term investment in expertise and education. Li Hongxin from Beijing Disheng Digital compared the evolution of painting with the impact of technology on opera, noting that new tools can enhance rather than replace traditional art forms. He Yimin of Digital World emphasized the importance of collaboration, inclusivity, and effectiveness in developing VR-based opera projects, aiming to create sustainable cross-industry products that serve both cultural and economic goals. The summit also featured performances by 14 renowned opera masters, who showcased their talents in a special show. Attendees included officials from the Ministry of Culture, local government representatives, and experts from Tsinghua University and other institutions. This event marked a significant step forward in the digital transformation of Chinese opera, offering a platform for dialogue, innovation, and cultural preservation.
