On December 22nd, the 4th National Congress of the Chinese Opera Performance Association and the 1st Chinese Opera Performance Art + VR Industry Summit Forum were held in Anqing, hosted by the Chinese Opera Performance Society and the People's Government of Yixiu District, with Digital World (Beijing) Technology & Culture Co., Ltd. as the organizer. VR Network was invited as a special media partner to cover the event. The forum brought together industry leaders, scholars, and experts to explore the integration of traditional opera with modern technology, particularly focusing on the role of VR in shaping the future of Chinese opera.
The event highlighted the importance of combining traditional art forms with digital innovation, aiming to foster creative transformation and sustainable development. Discussions revolved around how modern technologies like VR can enhance the reach, accessibility, and preservation of opera culture, while also maintaining its artistic integrity and cultural depth.
Several key speakers shared their insights during the roundtable discussions. Yi Dong, Executive Director of the Chinese Opera Performance Society and Assistant Dean at Wuhan University Art Academy, emphasized the need for a balanced approach—where technology supports rather than replaces the essence of opera. He noted that the fusion of ancient and modern should not only be about technical advancements but also about preserving the spiritual and aesthetic values of traditional performance.
Lin Ruiwu, former Vice President of the Fujian Academy of Arts, raised concerns about the potential loss of live performance authenticity when transitioning to VR. He pointed out that the spontaneity and emotional depth of live opera may be diminished when converted into a virtual format. However, he acknowledged the potential of VR in education and preservation, provided it is used with respect and care.
Zhang Wulong, Marketing Director at Beijing Huijie Technology, spoke about the challenges of making traditional opera more accessible to younger audiences through VR. He suggested that interactive elements and immersive experiences could help bridge the gap between generations. Xie Haifeng, founder of Chengdu Zhimu Chuangyi Technology and head of Guangdong’s intangible cultural heritage VR production base, emphasized the importance of professional expertise in capturing and presenting the cultural nuances of opera.
Li Hongxin, General Manager of Beijing Disheng Digital Entertainment, drew parallels between the evolution of painting and the impact of technology on opera. He argued that just as photography did not replace painting, VR can coexist with traditional performance, offering new ways to experience and preserve it.
He Yimin, CEO of Digital World, stressed the importance of collaboration, inclusivity, and practical outcomes in the integration of opera and VR. He called for cross-industry efforts to build platforms that support both artistic expression and economic sustainability.
The summit featured participation from over 50 theater professionals, 14 opera masters, and representatives from government, academia, and the tech sector. It marked a significant step forward in exploring how technology can serve as a bridge between tradition and innovation, ensuring that the rich legacy of Chinese opera continues to thrive in the digital age.
