Huawei and China Unicom to jointly develop 5G LTE-V2X applications
Since the launch of the ME909T in-vehicle module at the end of 2013, Huawei has steadily expanded its presence in the automotive networking space. Leveraging its strong background in telecommunications, the company has developed a comprehensive LTE-V vehicle networking system, including communication chips that enable real-time data exchange for vehicles. This technology has attracted major OEMs like Mercedes-Benz and Audi, showcasing Huawei's growing influence in the industry.
In 2017, during the 10th TC Automotive Internet Conference, Huawei announced a collaboration with China Unicom’s Zhiwang Technology to enhance cooperation in 5G, LTE-V2X, and car networking platforms. The goal was to test and validate LTE-V2X applications, aiming to build a more connected and intelligent transportation ecosystem.
The Intelligent Network Alliance is seen as a key direction for the future of the automotive industry. However, it's not just about the vehicle itself. For true smart mobility, seamless integration between vehicles and external elements—such as smartphones, road infrastructure, and other devices—is essential. As Guo Wei, General Manager of Huawei’s IoT Platform Area, stated, “In a V2X system, if only the cars or road infrastructures are built, intelligent traffic cannot be fully realized.†Communication remains the cornerstone of this transformation.
Vehicular Interconnect serves as a foundational layer for future mobility. It supports the safe and stable operation of intelligent transportation systems while also addressing the unique challenges of high-speed mobility—low latency, high reliability, and high bandwidth. Technologies like 5G and LTE-V2X can leverage global base station resources for efficient, cost-effective deployment, supporting a wide range of autonomous driving scenarios. Events like the GAIR Silicon Valley Smart Driving Summit highlight the growing interest in these innovations, bringing together industry leaders to explore the future of mobility.
China Unicom Zhiwang Technology, a subsidiary of China Unicom focused on car networking, was established in 2015 and now operates five branches. In April of this year, China Unicom formed a joint venture with a German Tier 1 supplier, each holding 50% equity. Combining their strengths in communications and automotive parts manufacturing, they aim to deliver smart transportation solutions to automakers.
Before signing the agreement, China Unicom had already partnered with Huawei and other telecom providers to develop the C-V2X standard, conducting tests with several car manufacturers. These collaborations underscore the industry’s shift toward integrated connectivity and smart infrastructure.
The development of a car networking platform is driven by the consensus that the future of the automotive industry must be deeply intertwined with the communications sector. This requires continuous improvements in communication services, data processing, and operational efficiency. At the same time, information security becomes increasingly critical, making it one of the two main directions for future collaboration.
This time, Huawei once again emphasized its stance of “not building cars,†clearly defining its role in the car networking business. According to Guo Hao, the company will focus on providing sustainable, vehicle-centric lifecycle management services and act as a platform for platforms.
According to Lei Feng Network, in September, Huawei, China Mobile, and FAW conducted field tests of LTE-V2X vehicle networking solutions, successfully completing tasks such as real-time data interaction, video dynamic calls, and vehicle routing. Huawei provided LTE-V2X communication technology and products, while China Mobile was responsible for the central platform, drive test control equipment, and the LTE-V2X communication network. These efforts demonstrate Huawei’s growing role in shaping the future of smart mobility.
