Obviously why the new machine Apple and Microsoft use the old processor?

But as we were amazed by the new Touch Bar feature, Apple's decision to use the previous generation of Skylake processor architecture was somewhat disappointing. Coincidentally, Microsoft's Surface Studio made the same choice two days before its official release. This in the end is why?

In September this year, Intel unexpectedly released the new Kaby Lake processor architecture. It is faster and more energy-efficient than the Skylake released last year, but uses the same CPU slots.

In theory, Kaby Lake has been improved in every aspect. Many Apple and Microsoft competitors have also used this processor architecture in their products, including Dell, Razer, Lenovo and MSI. However, the new products of these two companies did not use Kaby Lake architecture processor, whether the new Surface Studio, upgraded Surface Book, or all three new MacBook Pro, all chose the previous generation Skylake processor.

For the 15-inch MacBook Pro, the reason for choosing Skylake over Kaby Lake is actually simple. "The Kaby Lake chip doesn't exist yet," said one of Apple's representatives.

The launch of the Kaby Lake processor is relatively slow, with only a few models and power options available. The quad-core processor used on the 15-inch MacBook Pro does not currently have a Kaby Lake version. In fact, the processor used in this notebook is indeed the fastest on the market.

The same is true of Surface Studio and the new Surface Book, and the quad-core Skylake processors used by both companies currently do not have corresponding Kaby Lake models.

However, the graphics cards used by Surface Studio and Surface Book are also the previous generation of the NVIDIA 900 series, and NVIDIA has introduced a more powerful, lower power 1000 series graphics (Pascal architecture). The reason given by Microsoft and Apple's choice of an older processor for the 13-inch MacBook Pro is exactly the same: the NVIDIA 1000 series came too late.

Representatives of the two companies explained that they had already started the development of these devices before the advent of Kaby Lake or Pascal. If you choose to use them, the product has to be postponed.

No matter how good the new technology is, it must undergo extensive testing before it can actually be applied to the product. Even a small bug can cause catastrophic problems, especially for highly integrated devices such as Surface Studio and MacBook Pro.

Take for example the troublesome Samsung, this mobile phone giant still has not found out the cause of the explosion of Galaxy Note 7, and this is actually the result caused by hastily releasing the product. Microsoft and Apple have had similar experiences in the past, so they naturally choose to play a security card.

However, considering that the performance of older graphics cards is much lower than that of Pascal-based graphics cards, Microsoft's choice is still very frustrating. Although Surface Studio's graphics performance can be said to be more than enough to run games and handle 3D renderings, some users may still be embarrassed that it has not adopted the latest and fastest graphics cards.

For Apple products, things are slightly more acceptable, mainly because the Skylake used in the 13-inch MacBook Pro is very high-powered, but its performance is very strong, almost equal to the fastest Kaby Lake. However, at the same time, higher power consumption will also affect the battery life, which means that it requires a battery with a larger capacity than the competition.

If you don't mind the extra weight the battery brings, or if the notebook you bought for a million dollars was using a processor a year ago, then Apple's new MacBook Pro doesn't actually lag behind the times. Even older graphics cards used by Surface Studio are not that hard to accept, but those who have only configuration parameters in their eyes will not be happy about it.

Both Microsoft and Apple believe that the engineering strength of their products is more important than the fastest and strongest performance. As for the effect of this product idea, we can only wait and see.
