TV ODM industry presents a downward trend

In 2017, the global TV market faced a challenging year, with overall shipments declining by 4% year-on-year to reach 228 million units. Amid this downturn, many brand manufacturers struggled, yet some managed to thrive despite the tough environment. How did they do it? According to Sigmaintell's research, while global brand TV manufacturers saw a drop in shipments, the top 15 ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) TV producers experienced significant growth. Their shipments rose by 18.1% compared to the previous year, reaching 84.9 million units. This growth can be attributed to the increasing efficiency and technological advancements of ODMs, which allow them to produce high-quality TVs at lower costs and faster speeds. As a result, many brand companies have started outsourcing their low-end models to these ODMs. The image below illustrates the contrasting trends between branded TVs and the ODM industry. The TV ODM industry is showing a downward trend In terms of key players, TPV Technology remained the largest ODM TV supplier in 2017, with shipments rising by 2.6% to 16.3 million units. Meanwhile, Foxconn’s acquisition of Sharp helped it expand its supply chain, leading to a massive 72.8% increase in shipments, reaching 14.6 million units and securing the second position. Mainland Chinese ODM manufacturers also made strong gains. TCL SCBC saw a 24.3% increase in shipments, reaching 8.3 million units, while BOE reported a 12.5% rise to 7.7 million units. Shenzhen MTC also performed well, with a 25.7% growth in shipments, totaling 6.5 million units. Looking ahead, Sigmaintell predicts that the ODM TV market will continue to grow in 2018, with shipments expected to reach 88.5 million units, representing a 4.2% increase from 2017. This indicates that despite the challenges in the broader TV market, the ODM sector remains a resilient and dynamic force.
