TV ODM industry presents a downward trend
In 2017, the global TV market faced a challenging period, with overall shipments declining by 4% year-on-year to 228 million units. Amid this downturn, many brand TV companies struggled, yet some managed to thrive despite the difficult conditions. What made these brands succeed in such an environment?
According to Sigmaintell’s research, global TV shipments from major brand manufacturers dropped by 4% to 228 million units in 2017. However, the top 15 ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) TV producers saw a significant increase, shipping 84.9 million units—an 18.1% rise compared to the previous year. This growth was largely driven by improvements in foundry technology, which has enabled faster production and lower costs. As a result, many brand TV companies chose to outsource their low-end models to ODM factories.
Sigmaintell also noted that outsourcing orders for branded TV suppliers increased by 15% year-on-year in 2017. This shift allowed the ODM sector to grow steadily even during a broader market slowdown.
In 2017, TPV Technology remained the largest ODM TV supplier, leveraging its strong R&D capabilities to achieve a 2.6% year-on-year increase in shipments, reaching 16.3 million units. Meanwhile, Foxconn's acquisition of Sharp helped it expand its supply chain, leading to a massive 72.8% surge in shipments to 14.6 million units, placing it second in the rankings.
Mainland Chinese ODM manufacturers also experienced impressive growth. TCL SCBC saw a 24.3% increase in shipments, reaching 8.3 million units, while BOE reported a 12.5% rise to 7.7 million units. Shenzhen MTC also performed well, with a 25.7% increase in shipments to 6.5 million units.
Looking ahead, Sigmaintell predicts that the ODM TV market will continue to grow in 2018, with shipments expected to reach 88.5 million units—a 4.2% increase from 2017. This suggests that despite the challenges in the broader TV market, the ODM sector remains a key driver of growth.
