Interview: Volkswagen responds to questions about TSI engine

Interview: Volkswagen responds to questions about TSI engine

Volkswagen TSI turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine has become a benchmark for small displacement, high power, low speed, high torque and low fuel consumption engines, and has many global best engine awards, leading the trend of contemporary gasoline engines, but in the domestic There have been endless talks on the market about the "shrinkage of domestic TSI engine technology" and the existence of "soft ribs", and Volkswagen has not responded positively. Recently, Ke Yi'an, executive vice president of production, logistics and technology of Volkswagen Group (China), answered the relevant questions raised by the International Business Daily, which is by far the most authoritative interpretation of such issues by Volkswagen.

International Business Daily: There have been reports that the Volkswagen TSI engine produced in China has cancelled the stratified combustion technology, but why it should be cancelled. Want to hear from you?

Ke Yian: Volkswagen has eliminated the application of stratified combustion technology in gasoline direct injection engines supplied in the global market, not just in China. Because the stratified combustion technology will produce higher NOx emissions, additional catalytic conversion devices are required to deal with it, which leads to increased costs, which is not cost-effective compared to the fuel savings of this technology. Therefore, this technology has been cancelled globally by the Volkswagen Group.

International Business Daily: As far as I know, the maximum power of the domestic 1.4TSI engine is 96 kilowatts, while the European one is 90 kilowatts. Why is it different? Does higher power have an impact on the life of domestic engines?

Ke Yian: Volkswagen ’s TSI engine has great potential. In other words, there is a lot of room to adjust the power performance and characteristics, while ensuring the consistency of service life. Volkswagen adopts the same quality standards around the world. The 1.4TSI engine in Europe is calibrated at 90 kW, mainly considering that it is necessary to form a reasonable difference in power performance from models with other engines on the product line, so that consumers with different needs can choose. In China, in order to better meet the needs of Chinese users, Volkswagen made a decision to increase engine power and torque. In addition to the power increase of 6 kW, the 1.4TSI engine has a torque of 20 Nm higher than that of the European engine. Those with higher power and torque can benefit more from daily driving. On the technical level, the 1.4TSI engine in China is no different from that in Europe. The increase in power and torque is mainly achieved through software matching, determining the size of the turbocharger, and increasing the supercharge value in the supercharger. Of course, adjustment After the engine must be strictly matched with the gearbox and the entire vehicle, as well as high-intensity experiments, it is necessary to pay extra costs.

International Business Daily: People often mention the weakness of the TSI engine, including some of your sales staff also said that the engine needs 2 minutes to warm up after a cold start, and it needs to wait for 2 minutes to cool down before stopping after a high speed drive. Otherwise it will damage the engine. This is very inconvenient for users. Moreover, there is also the problem of the service life of the turbocharger.

Ke Yian: This is a misunderstanding. The TSI engine does not require special maintenance. Models equipped with TSI engines can not only perform the same as models equipped with traditional engines, but also bring more driving pleasure to the driver and save fuel. The TSI engine is designed with an auxiliary water pump, which automatically detects the working state of the engine and requires additional cooling. Even when the engine has been turned off, the auxiliary water pump will start working until the temperature is normal. In addition, the service life of the turbocharger is the same as that of the engine.

International Business Daily: The data you gave says that Volkswagen with TSI DSG is 25% fuel-efficient compared to competitors' A-class and 20% fuel-efficient for B-class cars. I would like to ask which opponent is referring to and how are these data calculated?

Ke Yi'an: Usually we don't mention the name of the opponent when comparing products. Since you asked so specifically, I had to make an exception. We did not use our own test data, but adopted the values published by the National Development and Reform Commission. Based on this data, in the comparison of the A-class car, the Ford Focus 1.8 automatic transmission model has a combined fuel consumption of 8.6 liters per 100 kilometers, and the Volkswagen Sagitar 1.4TSI DSG is 6.3 liters, which is 2.3 liters less than the opponent, which is 26%; in the B-class In the comparison of the car, the comprehensive fuel consumption of the Toyota Camry 2.4 automatic transmission model is 10.3 per 100 kilometers, and the Volkswagen Magotan 2.0TSI DSG is 8.3 liters, which is 2 liters less than the opponent, which is 20%.
