Galaxy S6 will use a homemade modem chip

Samsung Electronics is making significant strides in its efforts to reduce dependency on Qualcomm by developing its own mobile chips, particularly with the Exynos series. Recent reports from Korean media, including Naver News, suggest that Samsung is working on an in-house LTE modem chip, which could be featured in the upcoming Galaxy S6, expected to launch early next year. According to Tom’s Hardware, BGR, and G4 Games, Samsung is reportedly developing a three-band LTE Cat 10 modem for its new Exynos chip. This technology offers download speeds of up to 450 Mbps, surpassing the current LTE Cat 6 standard of 300 Mbps. While some units of the Galaxy S6 may still use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chips, it's speculated that future models could feature Samsung's self-developed solutions. If Samsung successfully integrates its own modem, CPU, and GPU into its devices, it could significantly cut down on reliance on external suppliers like Qualcomm. However, despite the potential performance advantage, Tom’s Hardware notes that Samsung may not immediately replace Qualcomm entirely. The company's large-scale smartphone production requires time to scale up internal manufacturing, meaning Qualcomm will likely remain a key supplier for the next one or two years. Additionally, ZDNet Korea reported that Samsung is set to unveil its own GPU in the middle of next year. Though this might not be available for the Galaxy S6 at the start of 2015, it could potentially be used in the Galaxy Note 5 later in the year. Despite these advancements, Samsung still faces challenges in the IC design space. Competing with industry giants like Apple, Qualcomm, and AMD remains uncertain. Some analysts suggest that Samsung might consider acquiring an IC design firm to bolster its capabilities. For instance, AMD, though struggling financially, possesses valuable expertise in CPUs and GPUs that could benefit Samsung. With its strong financial position, Samsung could help AMD transition into the mobile market. However, such moves are still speculative, and Samsung must first evaluate the performance of its own R&D before deciding on potential acquisitions.
