Galaxy S6 will use a homemade modem chip
Samsung Electronics is making significant strides in reducing its reliance on Qualcomm by developing its own mobile chips, particularly through its Exynos series. According to Korean media Naver News, Samsung is working on an LTE modem chip that could be used in the upcoming "Galaxy S6" next year. This move highlights the company’s growing ambition to control more of its hardware ecosystem.
Tom's Hardware and BGR reported that Samsung is developing a self-designed three-band LTE Cat 10 modem for its new Exynos chips. This technology can reach speeds of up to 450 Mbps, surpassing the current LTE Cat 6 standard of 300 Mbps. It's expected that the Galaxy S6 might feature some of these new Exynos chips, while others may still use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810. However, it's noted that the Snapdragon 810 won't support Cat 10, only Cat 6.
If Samsung successfully integrates Cat 10 into its chips, it could potentially offer faster connectivity than what Qualcomm currently provides. Despite this, Tom's Hardware cautions that even with superior performance, Samsung may not immediately replace Qualcomm in the short term. The company has massive smartphone shipments, and ramping up production of its own chips will take time. As a result, it's likely that Samsung will continue purchasing from Qualcomm for the next one or two years.
In addition, ZDNet Korea reported that Samsung is set to unveil its own GPU in the middle of next year. Although it may not be available for the Galaxy S6 at the start of 2015, it could appear in the Galaxy Note 5 later in the year.
However, Samsung still faces challenges in IC design, and whether its self-developed chips can compete with industry leaders like Apple, Qualcomm, and Anym remains uncertain. Tom's Hardware suggests that Samsung may need to acquire an IC design firm to gain the necessary expertise. The report mentioned AMD as a potential target, noting that while AMD has struggled recently, it possesses valuable CPU and GPU technologies that Samsung could benefit from. With its strong financial position, Samsung could help AMD enter the mobile market.
These are all speculative ideas, but they reflect the growing interest in Samsung's long-term strategy. Before considering acquisitions, the company must first evaluate the performance of its own research and development efforts. Whether it goes the independent route or pursues strategic partnerships, Samsung is clearly aiming to become a major player in the mobile chip market.
