GoPro drone continues to "fried machine" GoPro plans the fifth big layoff

According to recent reports, GoPro's focused drone project, the Karma, faced significant challenges, including multiple incidents that damaged its reputation and negatively impacted the company's operations. In response, GoPro is now preparing for its fifth round of layoffs, which are expected to affect around 200 to 300 employees, primarily from the drone division. The company claims that these cuts will not hinder its long-term growth, as it still maintains a substantial workforce. As a brand known for its innovative and tech-savvy approach, GoPro has long been a favorite among extreme sports enthusiasts, with its action cameras becoming a symbol of adventure and high-energy lifestyle. However, this success in the sports camera market did not translate well into other areas, particularly when it came to drones. The release of the Karma drone in September 2016 was marred by several incidents, including reports of the device catching fire or exploding, which severely damaged GoPro’s reputation. Despite four previous rounds of layoffs, the company is now moving forward with another round, set to take effect in February next year. According to internal communications shared with employees, the company stated that the layoffs are aimed at aligning the business more closely with current market demands. GoPro’s CEO, Nick Woodman, emphasized that the restructuring efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure the company remains competitive and continues to grow. In November 2017, GoPro had a total of 1,254 employees, and despite the layoffs, the company still operates on a large scale. At last year’s CES conference, Woodman mentioned that the company is still committed to the development of the Karma drone, though the impact of the latest layoffs on future drone initiatives remains unclear. Financially, GoPro continued to face losses in fiscal year 2016, but saw some improvement in the early quarters of 2017. It wasn’t until the most recent quarter that the company finally turned a profit. These developments suggest that the previous rounds of layoffs and financial restructuring may be helping the company move in the right direction.
