The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is one of the most promising sectors of the future, and the arrival of the 5G era is accelerating its growth. However, while there are significant opportunities in car connectivity, challenges also remain, with cybersecurity being a critical concern that cannot be overlooked. The development of the IoV is growing rapidly, bringing new life to various industries and opening up new possibilities for transformation and innovation. Yet, as it moves forward, the industry will continue to face both opportunities and obstacles. There are still many hurdles to overcome. According to IEK manager Shi Yuxian, several key issues deserve close attention. One of them is the importance of real-time communication. This topic has been widely discussed since the early stages of IoV development, and for good reason. In autonomous driving or ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), even a small delay can be catastrophic. For example, determining the distance to an obstacle or applying brakes requires split-second decisions—any delay of a second or more could lead to serious accidents. To address this issue, 5G technology is seen as a potential game-changer. As 5G becomes more mature, it offers significantly faster speeds and lower latency compared to 4G, which is essential for reliable vehicle connectivity. Currently, 4G networks struggle to meet the high-speed and low-latency demands of IoV. However, 5G is expected to revolutionize this space, serving as the backbone for future smart transportation systems. Ericsson, a leading Swedish telecom company, predicts that 5G will start entering the market in 2019 and experience explosive growth by 2020. The value of car networking lies in its ability to enable vehicles to receive and exchange large amounts of real-time data, connecting cars with people, other vehicles, and their surroundings. Looking ahead, the diversity and richness of information content will become increasingly important. Shi Yuxian used maps as an example, noting that future car networking services require more accurate and detailed map data. The development of 3D mapping, including terrain, weather, and road conditions, is becoming a key goal. The more comprehensive and precise the data, the greater the value the IoV can deliver. Without high-quality infrastructure and rich content, the full potential of the IoV cannot be realized. Cybersecurity remains a major concern. The industry is increasingly focused on how hackers might exploit vulnerabilities to remotely control in-vehicle systems. Surveys show that many parts of a vehicle’s electronic system are susceptible to attacks. Even small components like speakers can be hacked, making car hackers a top threat for manufacturers. A well-known example is the Jeep Cherokee, which was found vulnerable to security breaches. Hackers were able to access the vehicle’s wireless communication system, manipulate speed, and track driving routes. This led to a massive recall of over one million vehicles. Such incidents highlight the urgent need for stronger security measures. While network security is a major challenge, it also presents an opportunity for innovation and added value in the IoV ecosystem.
