China Mobile's Next Generation Internet of Things--Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IOT) Fully Commercialized in Shandong

On December 21st, China Mobile officially launched its next-generation Internet of Things technology—Narrow-Band IoT (NB-IoT)—across Shandong province. This marks a major milestone in the region’s smart infrastructure development. To date, Shandong has deployed over 10,000 NB-IoT base stations, enabling widespread applications in areas such as smart meter reading, street lighting, manhole cover monitoring, parking management, home automation, transportation systems, and agriculture. NB-IoT is known for its low cost, ultra-low power consumption, massive device connectivity, and wide coverage, making it ideal for large-scale IoT deployments. In December, China Mobile Shandong completed the nationwide coverage of its NB-IoT network, serving sectors like municipal management, industrial manufacturing, logistics, and agricultural production. It now stands as the largest provincial NB-IoT network in China. One notable application is the use of NB-IoT-enabled smart street lights on major roads in Jinan, including Jingshi Road. These lights allow centralized control and individual lamp energy management. They can automatically adjust brightness based on ambient light and traffic conditions, significantly reducing energy waste. In case of any malfunction, the system sends alerts to maintenance teams, ensuring quick response times. In smart manufacturing, NB-IoT enables real-time communication between control platforms and factory equipment, making remote intelligent management possible. According to Zhang Xuan, General Manager of China Mobile Shandong, the province has already connected over 15 million IoT devices. The company plans to invest more than 500 million yuan in 2018 to deploy over 30,000 additional NB-IoT base stations. The goal is to reach 30 million IoT connections by next year, surpassing mobile phone users by 2020 with an estimated 70 million connected devices.
