China Mobile's Next Generation Internet of Things--Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IOT) Fully Commercialized in Shandong
On December 21st, China Mobile officially launched its next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) technology—Narrow-Band IoT (NB-IoT)—across Shandong Province. This marks a major milestone in the region’s smart infrastructure development. To date, over 10,000 NB-IoT base stations have been deployed, enabling a wide range of applications such as smart meter reading, intelligent street lighting, manhole cover monitoring, parking management, home automation, transportation systems, and agricultural solutions.
NB-IoT is known for its low cost, low power consumption, high connectivity, and broad coverage. In December, China Mobile Shandong completed the construction of a province-wide NB-IoT network, supporting municipal management, industrial manufacturing, logistics, and agriculture. It now stands as the largest provincial NB-IoT network under China Mobile's operations.
One notable application is the deployment of smart street lights along major roads in Jinan, including Jingshi Road. These lights are equipped with NB-IoT technology, allowing for centralized monitoring and individual lamp energy management. The system can automatically adjust brightness based on ambient light and traffic conditions, significantly reducing energy waste. Additionally, if a fault occurs, the system alerts maintenance teams instantly, improving response times and operational efficiency.
In the realm of smart manufacturing, NB-IoT enables real-time communication between control platforms and production equipment, making remote intelligent control possible. This enhances productivity and reduces downtime.
According to Zhang Xuan, General Manager of China Mobile Shandong, the number of IoT connections in the province has surpassed 15 million. In 2018, the company plans to invest over 500 million yuan to build more than 30,000 NB-IoT base stations. The goal is to reach 30 million IoT connections by next year and surpass mobile phone users by 2020, with over 70 million connected devices. This ambitious expansion underscores Shandong's commitment to becoming a leader in the IoT revolution.
