The main areas of application for contactless power supply include mobile devices such as smartphones and electric vehicles (EVs). Japanese and South Korean manufacturers have shown strong activity in this domain. For example, Seiko Epson, Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung Electronics have filed numerous patents for smartphone-related technologies. Similarly, Japanese automakers like Toyota, Nissan, and Toyota Automatic Weaving Machine have led in EV-related innovations. Beyond consumer electronics and vehicles, there has been a growing interest in using weak electromagnetic waves in the air for energy harvesting. This technology is especially useful for powering sensors in hard-to-reach or maintenance-intensive environments. While the number of applications remains relatively small, it is gradually increasing, with U.S. and Japanese companies leading the way. Japanese companies have also taken the lead in addressing key challenges in non-contact power supply, such as foreign object interference, electromagnetic leakage, and misalignment between transmitters and receivers. These technical advancements are reflected in their extensive patent portfolios. In the field of microwave-based power transmission, Japanese applicants hold the largest share of patents. This highlights Japan’s strong position in developing advanced wireless power solutions. To maintain this advantage, Japanese companies should focus on modularizing components, protecting intellectual property, and continuing to invest in R&D. Overall, contactless power supply technology is evolving rapidly, with Japan playing a pivotal role in shaping its future.
