Wireless power supply patent Japan dominates in smart phones and cars

Contactless power supply technology, also known as wireless power transmission, is a method that allows devices to receive energy without the need for physical plugs or wires. This technology has been around for a long time and has found its way into various applications. Back in the late 20th century, several products already used non-contact power solutions, and research aimed at improving efficiency and capacity was ongoing. A major breakthrough came in 2007 when a team from MIT successfully demonstrated high-power, efficient wireless charging over several meters using magnetic resonance. This development sparked widespread interest and accelerated R&D efforts globally. In the "2014 Patent Application Technology Trend Survey" conducted by the Japan Patent Office, researchers analyzed patent trends related to contactless power technologies. The survey categorized patents into several areas, including power supply methods (such as magnetic and electric field coupling), application fields (like mobile devices and vehicles), failure prevention, foreign object detection, sub-structure technologies, and control systems. The number of patent applications related to wireless power surged from 799 in 2006 to 3,905 in 2011, showing a fivefold increase. This growth was likely influenced by MIT's groundbreaking research. Following this, both Japanese and U.S. companies saw a rise in applications, with European and Korean firms quickly catching up. In terms of usage, contactless power is widely applied in mobile devices such as smartphones and electric vehicles (EVs). For mobile products, Seiko Epson led with 114 applications, followed by Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung. In the automotive sector, Toyota topped the list with 503 patents, highlighting Japan’s strong presence in this field. Beyond mobile and vehicle applications, there is growing interest in using ambient electromagnetic waves for power supply. This concept, known as energy harvesting, aims to power sensors and other devices without batteries. Although still in early stages, the number of related patents is increasing, with U.S. companies leading the way. Japanese companies have also made significant contributions in addressing key challenges in wireless power, such as foreign object interference, electromagnetic leakage, and alignment issues between transmitters and receivers. Their expertise in coil design and component integration gives them a competitive edge. To maintain their leadership, Japanese companies should focus on modularizing wireless power systems and strengthening their intellectual property strategies. In the automotive industry, they continue to develop solutions for outdoor charging, ensuring safety and convenience. Looking ahead, Japan’s strong foundation in microwave-based wireless power and radio wave energy harvesting suggests it is well-positioned to lead future innovations in this space. Continued investment and R&D will be essential to fully realize the potential of contactless power technology.
