Sina Technology News, Beijing time, January 20 evening — According to a report released by research firm Gartner on Wednesday, global computing equipment shipments in 2016 are expected to reach 2.4 billion units, marking a 1.9% increase from the previous year. However, end-user spending on these devices is projected to decline for the first time, with a drop of approximately 0.5%.
Gartner defines computing devices as PCs, tablets, ultramobiles, and mobile phones. High-end ultramobiles include hybrid and clamshell laptops such as the Microsoft Surface and Apple MacBook Air, while basic ultramobiles like the iPad, iPad mini, Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5, Nexus 7, and Acer Iconia Tab 8 are more practical and widely used.
The report highlights that the global market is still influenced by economic conditions across different regions. Ranjit Atwal, head of research at Gartner, emphasized the need to segment markets into four categories: economically challenged mature markets, economically stable mature markets, economically challenged emerging markets, and economically stable emerging markets. Countries like Russia and Brazil fall into the former category, while India represents an economically stable emerging market, and Japan is considered an economically challenged mature market.
For traditional PCs (desktops and laptops), Gartner forecasts 232 million units shipped this year, down from 246 million in 2015. Shipments are expected to decrease further to 226 million in 2017 and 219 million in 2018. Meanwhile, high-end ultramobiles are expected to reach 55 million units in 2016, up from 45 million in 2015, and basic ultramobiles are projected to reach 195 million units, slightly higher than the 196 million units in 2015.
Global mobile phone shipments are expected to rise to 1.959 billion units in 2016, compared to 1.910 billion in 2015. The numbers are forecasted to grow to 1.983 billion in 2017 and 2.034 billion in 2018. Overall, global computing equipment shipments will reach 2.441 billion units in 2016, an increase of 1.9% from 2015’s 2.933 billion.
Atwal noted that high-end ultramobiles, new PCs based on Intel Skylake architecture, and Windows 10 are expected to drive demand in the PC market. He also mentioned that commercial users are likely to adopt Windows 10 faster than previous upgrades. A survey conducted by Gartner in the fourth quarter of 2015 among 3,000 business users in six countries found that nearly 80% plan to complete testing for Windows 10 within one year, with over 60% expecting to finish within nine months.
By the end of 2016, many business users are expected to transition to Windows 10, and by 2017, 40% of commercial users are projected to be running the operating system.
In 2016, global mobile phone shipments are expected to grow by 2.6%, with end-user spending increasing by 1.2%. However, this growth is not enough to offset the overall decline in computing device spending. Gartner predicts that 82% of global mobile phones will be smartphones by the end of 2016, up from 70% in 2015.
According to the report, local and Chinese smartphone brands are expected to launch feature-rich, affordable smartphones that meet user needs without requiring frequent upgrades to high-end models. This trend may influence consumer behavior and slow the pace of high-end smartphone adoption.
