US Senator asked Alphabet and Twitter to publicly sign data sharing agreement information with Chinese manufacturers
Beijing time on June 8 morning news, a senior US senator said on Thursday that he has asked Google's parent company Alphabet and Twitter to submit data sharing agreement information with Chinese manufacturers. Prior to this, Facebook disclosed similar cooperation with several Chinese companies this week.
Mark Warner, a US Democratic senator and vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he had written to the two companies on Thursday and disclosed the contents of the letter.
Facebook said on Tuesday that the company has signed a cooperation agreement with at least four Chinese companies.
Alphabet previously announced a strategic partnership with Huawei, Xiaomi and Tencent.
In his letter, he asked whether Apple CEO Larry Page signed a “third-party partnership†with Chinese equipment manufacturers and whether to conduct a review to ensure that these companies properly processed user data. He also asked Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey if the company also had a relationship with Huawei.
Google said in an e-mailed statement on Thursday: "We have agreements with a number of manufacturers around the world, including Huawei. We have not provided a special channel for obtaining Google user data in these agreements. Our agreement also includes privacy and Security measures."
Twitter declined to comment. The New York Times reported on Sunday that Facebook’s user friend data could be used by device vendors without the user’s explicit permission. Facebook denied the matter and said that data acquisition allows users to use account features on mobile devices.
The report sparked a lot of criticism from US lawmakers, and some believe that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg should disclose the matter at a congressional hearing in April this year.
