Prof. Qingqing Tai Releases the First Example of "Candidate Candlelight" OLED Light Source Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are regarded as the next generation of lighting source technology. Professor Zhou Zhuoxhui’s laboratory team of Tsinghua University published the world's first “candidate candle” OLED light source that does not need to burn hydrocarbons, combined with ITRI. Zhou Zhuohui said that the research results of the candlelight OLED light source were not only accepted by the world-famous journal Advanced Functional Materials, but also included in the material view in the Christmas special feature.

At present, 10 key technologies have been mastered, and applications and patents have been applied one after the other. Another laboratory has accumulated more than 40 OLED related patents, and there are already foreign patent agents and well-known domestic manufacturers, and they are actively involved in the purchase of patents.

Zhou Zhuohui pointed out that the lighting market has huge business opportunities. This year, the total global output value reached about 3.3 trillion yuan. However, the flat panel display will not reach 3.3 trillion yuan in output value until 2018.

Compared to the mature LED technology in the market, Zhou Zhuohui said that although the former is more power-efficient, it is a point light source, and the spot is concentrated and dazzling. It is not suitable for application in the city lighting; OLED is a planar light that does not generate high heat and soft. OLED is not only applied to the display, but also can be used as an illumination source, and the OLED luminescence characteristics can solve the problem of heat dissipation of the LED lighting. Zhou Zhuohui is optimistic that OLED will rewrite the history of human lighting.

Zhou Zhuohui said that he did not choose the white light OLED, but out of the OLED niche market, to find two killer applications, including high color rendering lighting, ultra-low color temperature physiological friendly lighting. He said that the candlelight OLED light source is the first man-made candle light source that uses electricity and does not have to burn hydrocarbons. It has been recognized and published by internationally renowned journals.

The use of candles by humans has been 5,000 years old. In addition to lighting, candlelight is the light source that affects the body's production of melatonin, and it is also the most friendly light source for human physiology, but candles have inconvenience.

Zhou Zhuohui pointed out that comparing candles and candlesticks of OLEDs, candlesticks would not be hot, smokeless or fire-free. They would be more convenient, more energy-efficient than candles, and would create a romantic atmosphere. If mass production were to take place in the future, they would replace candles.

Liao Yubin, chairman of Yanling Optoelectronics, believes that from the point of time when R&D and manufacturing processes were put into operation, the first mass production of candlelight products will come out in about a year and a half.

ITRI ​​said that the development of mass production equipment for OLED-related evaporation equipment will be ready for testing by the end of 2013.
