Qualcomm leverages NFC chip QCA1990 to pry open mobile payment applications

Electronic enthusiast network [compilation / vincent]: Recently, Qualcomm has developed a near field communication chip-QCA1990, which will support mobile payment, contactless communication and data exchange.

Qualcomm subsidiary Atheros said that QCA1990 has passed tests to ensure that it meets the requirements of the payment agreement, and will be launched to customers in the first quarter of 2013, and is expected to be conducted with leading original equipment manufacturers in the third quarter of 2013 Business Design.

Qualcomm Atheros said that the launch of QCA1990 is to combine with WCN3680 to achieve greater functionality. WCN3680 chip supports dual-band 802.11ac wireless network connection, Bluetooth 4.0 and FM radio communication. The chip also provides a "platform" integrated by the Snapdragon S4 processor to support NFC for smartphones and tablets.

The QCA1990 software stack conforms to the NFC Forum Controller Interface (NCI) standard, and its radio performance exceeds the requirements of the EMVCo standard and the NFC Forum. EMVCo represents major credit card companies such as Europay, Mastercard and Visa.

Qualcomm Atheros also claims that the QCA1990 chip only requires an antenna, and that the antenna is about 8 times smaller than the products currently on the market, which can allow OEMs to save costs and further control NFC modules at a lower price. QCA1990 also provides a series of security elements, both embedded and SIM-based, including configurations that support dual SIM cards.
